Homeostasis - the tendency of a system to maintain internal stability to any situation or stimulus that would tend to disturb its normal condition or function.
Our bodies are very sophisticated machines that are programmed to maintain homeostasis. When one system is down, it will borrow from others to find this balance. However, balance does not mean stagnation. It means being able to more easily ride and adapt to incoming stressors in our lives. At some point, we have all been out of balance, allowing disease to creep in. Most of us will head over to the closest pharmacy and load up on pharmaceuticals directly aimed at our symptoms. But, what these pharmaceuticals end up doing is masking these warning signs, giving us a false sense that we are healed so that we can continue with our lives and not addressing the underlying cause. Then the next time disease creeps in, we become less and less able to fight it naturally as our bodies are not being allowed to achieve homeostasis.
If we would approach disease from the idea that these symptoms are really just our body crying out for balance, we could learn to help read our bodies, these symptoms and heal ourselves using herbs and other natural remedies. One of the greatest benefits of herbal medicine is that it does not interfere with our bodies natural healing process. Many herbs work by stimulating various glands and systems of the body so that appropriate hormones are activated, inducing or inhibiting certain processes in order for healing to take place.
Many pharmaceuticals were originally derived from an herb that was taken into a lab and certain components isolated to create this drug. But, since we know our bodies are sophisticated machines, they recognize it is not a whole being taken into our bodies so it will again be searching for homeostasis. And then cue all side effects that come with pharmaceuticals! Many common ailments can be eliminated with a healthy diet, rest, exercise and the use of whole plant herbal medicine. These dietary and lifestyle changes help us get our bodies into a healthy rhythm. When we are consistent with these changes, chances of future occurrences of the same disease are greatly reduced.
